Our Little Neville

We are thinking we should have named Caden - Neville. After the Harry Potter character Neville Longbottom.
Why you might ask?
Because he seems to have a long bottom. No matter what we do he always is showing a little plumber's crack.
Today Clark heard him crying after his nap and came into the room to find him stuck in his own pants, oh the curse of the long bottom.

Stupefied

The other day Ethan jumped off the couch and yelled, "I'm stupid!" I was shocked, so many questions ran though my mind in a matter of seconds: "who did he learn that word from?," "does he know what it means?," "why is he calling himself stupid?," "does he have poor self-esteem,?" "I hope he doesn't say this at nursery!," "don't you know how wonderful you are?!"

While my thoughts were racing I was trying to compose in my head how to talk to him about not using this "s" word. In the meantime Ethan climbed back on the couch and jumped off again yelling, "I'm stupid!" I was a little puzzled because he had a big grin on his face, and then it dawned on me, he was yelling, "I'm super!" I was so relieved! Yes Ethan, you are SUPER!

Even though I know what he is saying it still catches me off guard when he says it. After his bath when I wrapped him up in the frog towel he said, "I'm a super froggy." That's what this video is all about...would you have been confused too?

And while we're on the subject of frogs...here's another little froggy that I think is pretty super too!

Thoughts on Art

I've heard the quote that "great art picks up where nature ends," but I don't know how any artist could beat the art we have found on our windows when we wake up this month.

When I pulled up Ethan's blinds I was amazed that the tree in our front yard looked like it had leaves made of ice.

We had a fun time inspecting the window together and noticing all of the intricate patterns and details made of ice crystals.

Earlier this month Clark and I had a chance to visit the local Art Museum. I am a person that appreciates art, I'm amazed at what people with talent can do. I am also a person that struggles a little with modern or abstract art that looks to me like something went terribly wrong in the kitchen and happened to land on a canvas (maybe I would appreciate it more if I had studied art? not sure). Anyway, we were having a fun time exploring the museum and appreciating the painting, sculptures, etc. We were trying to be open minded about some of the "weird" ones...but then we came to my favorite.
It was a white canvas hanging on the wall. For a second we thought one of the paintings had been stolen. But upon further investigation realized that was the art work. A canvas painted white. We read the little blurb, apparently the artist limited himself to the color white to avoid unnecessary distractions. Really? Why didn't I come up with that, even I could have painted a canvas white! Then the giggling started, followed by a quick exit.

Oh What Do We Do In The Wintertime...

We have had a fun sledding outing with friends!

Just trying to stay warm.

Caden's first trip on a sled. He looks so amused.

These kids had it made, they got to be pulled back up the hill too!

Ethan's first sledding train.

To avoid the cold we've had lots of playing in the tent!

We've had a little climbing in boxes!

We have had some major sleep issues!

We've even had a random photo shoot!

One night while getting the boys ready for bed Clark dressed them and Josephina in blue pants, green shirts and hats for a photo shoot.

Clark realizing that getting these 2 to hold still for a photo shoot is pretty much mission impossible.

We have definitely had a lot of cozy nights being very grateful for a warm house to live in!

He wore blue velvet

This little guy has a 2 tooth perma-grin!

I found these jammies with the tags still on them, they were given to me from one of my students as a baby gift for Ethan. Everytime we put this hat on poor Caden Ethan cracks up. But seriously, who would have thought someone could make baby blue velvet look so good!

Downhill Derby

Friday night I could hardly sleep anticipating the big race Saturday morning! We met early to do a little practicing in the living room. Here is our team on the "purple people eater" the "human caterpillar" or the "snake of doom."

When we got to the race we saw some awesome creations...like this duck or alligator below. Some of our other favorites were the giant toilet, the full size Harley, the big Monster truck, and the shark.

Our creation didn't look so splendid sitting next to all of the others...but we were in it for the speed contest, not a beauty pageant! And I felt a little proud that we were the only sled that could boast that it could carry 6 people!

We were number 77, there were over 80 entries! They made us all line up, and it was quite a wait in the FREEZING temperatures! We were very glad we had left the boys home in the warm house with a babysitter.

This is where we were at the end of the line.

Clark was wearing our cardboard face, we didn't want to put it on our sled to slow us down!

After watching most of the sleds crash and burn it was finally our turn. I was so nervous and excited. After test running our saucers earlier in the week I knew we would be FAST! The time to beat was a fast 11 seconds! The next picture series was taken by the radio station and shows pretty well what happened!

Taking off...Carolyn is still smiling!

Gathering speed quickly and realizing our front sled is not going to keep up with the saucers!

Our snake started to turn and Clark's sled bit the snow hard and he started to flip!

Clark and I tumbled a long way down the hill...yes that is my leg in the air!

The rest of our group tried to keep going, but to no avail! I was ticked our ride was so short after waiting so long, so I hiked back up, found one of the broken off saucers and rode it down the hill, until I crashed into the berm on the left and took a huge face full of snow! I think we provided good entertainment to the spectators!

We should have tested our lead sled! If I could do it again we would just do a saucer train...but "What Might Have Been," has been my consolation song in my head the last couple of days. "I try not to think about what might have been, cause that was then, and we have taken different roads, we can't go back again, there's no use giving in, and there's no way to know...what might have been."

All in all it was a great Iowa adventure! As we were walking back to the car we all started brainstorming what we could do better next year before sadly realizing we won't be here next year!

But we can still win the best hat contest! Go to this website and vote for Clark! I'm an entry too in the turkey hat, but my vote goes to the hot dog man!

The Sled Video

I was pretty excited that our crash made the radio station's Youtube video! This video is worth watching just to see the giant toilet crash!

What do you get...

when you bring an accountant, mechanical engineer, and school teacher together?

Well, you get a killer cardboard sled of course.

This Saturday is the famous cardboard sled and duct tape derby! We loved participating in 2009, had to sit out in 2010 to protect my unborn Caden, but we are ready to roll again in 2011. This time our spouses feel they are a bit too busy working at the cinic and studying to help build the sled - so the girls are taking over.

This year we found out the prize for the fastest sled is $500! So we are taking the building process a little more seriously this time around. Today we decided we needed to test run a few of our designs. So at about 6:30 tonight we headed out in the dark night to the hilly golf course. The thermostat on my car said 4 degrees. On Monday we had a lot of rain and it has been super freezing the rest of the week, so our testing hill was basically a sheet of ice!

My first run was on the one-ply-no-duct-tape-sled...it was a no go. My second run was on the two-ply-duct-tape-wonder-sled! Oh my, it exceeded all expectations! I flew down the hill, screaming the whole way down. In the dark it was quite terrifying.

All I can say to the rest of Des Moines is be afraid, be very afraid...our team is bringing it! Woot-woot!

Tonight brought back lots of memories from my old glory days of riding mattresses down the stairs at the old nunnery when I did a semester in Nauvoo, or midnight trash can races at Rock Canyon park my freshman year in Provo. Just like old times, except for the baby staying warm in the car, and the 2 year old holding a little flashlight cheering on his old mom from the top of the hill!

Happy

Tonight Steph and Ethan made us some popcorn to eat while we watched the movie Babe. After adding what they thought was enough butter, Steph said, "We better add some more butter for Daddy's sake." I told them they didn't need to, and she replied, "Don't worry, it's not saturated yet." To this Ethan added, "Don't worry, it's not sad-ur-aded. It's just happy!"

MY BOYS

At the end of November we had family pictures taken by Amanda Bills, I was amazed at how well they turned out with a baby and a 2 year old!

I LOVE these 2 little boys! I feel like they are changing so fast, sometimes I wish I had a video camera to record everyday so that I can remember all of the cute, funny and precious little moments we share.

Here are a few pictures from our photo shoot and a few words that describe my boys right now as we begin 2011!

CADEN

Content.
He is happy! All.the.time.

Angelic.
He has a sweet disposition and such an easy going temperament, he truly is an angel.

Drooler.
We're thinking he's working on a few new cute teeth to join his bottom two.

Explorer.
Now that he is mobile he is into everything, it amazes me how he can find the tiniest little crumbs on the floor to put right in his mouth.

Nuzzler.
He still loves to snuggle and cuddle. We love it too!

ETHAN

Energetic.
This kid seriously has one speed; ramming speed! Either he is on the go or asleep, there is no in between.

Talkative.
A two year old's take on the world is quite refreshing. I love his sweet voice and his mispronounced words.

Handsome.
Everytime he gets his hair combed he says, "I'm handsome now." He also got into wearing Papa's cologne in Boise so he could "smell handsome."

Action-oriented.
Every morning he wakes up and asks, "what are we doing today Mommy?" His life is one big party and adventure!

Nightowl.
As of late he will stay awake for hours in his bed, he used to fall right to sleep so easily. Just doesn't want to miss any excitement.

Flying Solo

A few observations from my 13 hours of traveling home yesterday with my 2 boys:

Two cuties peeking out the airplane window.

When you show up at the airport with a giant double stroller, an active toddler, and a cute baby you get quite a variety of reactions from people. Some give you a look of pity, some give you a look of disgust when they find out you will be on their flight, some give you a look of awe and tell you that you are crazy to fly alone with two youngsters, and a few lovely people give you a look of sympathy and offer to help get your carry-on bag on to the plane! (I love those people).

Considering that we had to take 3 different flights to finally make it back to Des Moines I think my boys did a great job! Several people as they were leaving the planes gave me a few words of congratulations for having such well behaved little travelers...what these people didn't see were the moments that made me laugh, and the moments where my blood pressure raised the roof!

Ethan's little antics kept everyone around him entertained. When we boarded the first plane the flight attendant said, "hello." He (his name was Ran) was a little taken aback when Ethan replied with, "I'm just getting on the airplane to go home to pick my Daddy up at the airport." Ran checked on Ethan pretty regularly during the flight and got quite an earful each time he stopped by (including Ethan speaking in gibberish, is it normal that he has begun speaking in a made up tongue? Are we reading him too much Dr. Seuss?). Ran was nice enough to give Ethan a second apple juice when he told him, "my Brown Dog needs an apple juice now."

I'm sure everyone on the long flight from Seattle to Minneapolis appreciated when he yelled, "I'm pooping mom!" By the way, changing a rather tall two year old in those tiny airplane bathrooms is pretty much impossible.

Ethan also had a few moments of defiance. As we were getting off the plane I had gathered up our coats, bags and Caden, all Ethan was asked to do was carry Brown Dog and follow me. Right as I started down the aisle he chose to sit down and put his seat belt back on, refusing to follow. I went up ahead a few rows and got out of the way so everyone could pass, Ethan couldn't see me and went hysterical crying and yelling, "mommy, mommy!" Everyone glared at me like I was a huge jerk that forgot my son. I had to put everything down and go rescue him. Then as soon as we got off the plane while we were waiting for our stroller he took off running down the jetway and disappeared into the airport. By the time we got it all together I was so mad, he got a little talking to and I think he got the message...when he talked to Clark shortly after that he said, "we listen to mommy and we don't run away Daddy, that is very naughty."

My favorite moment was during slightly rough landing in Minneapolis. There was a sweet boy with Downs Syndrome sitting behind us. When the tires hit the runway he yelled, "yahoo," and Ethan yelled, "yay." They went back and forth cheering. I started giggling until I heard Ethan yell "help." When I looked over at him the abrupt stopping had made him slide right out of his seat, the seat belt had caught him just under the chin and he was basically hanging by his head. I quickly unbuckled him and he fell to the floor. The whole scene probably lasted less than a minute but it was hilarious!

Hurray for airports with kids play places!

We were sure excited to see Clark when we finally made it to Des Moines! Clark has never looked more beautiful to me than he did at the airport!

An Extra Week in Boise

Our original plan was to fly home January 5th...but lucky us, a blizzard in December changed our flight plans so we got an extra week in Boise!

The best part was that the extra week gave my Grandma Peterson a chance to fly out to Boise. We loved visiting with her! She is a great lady and a wonderful example to her 30 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. She has always been a big influence and very involved in all of our lives.

She has the magic touch! I handed her Caden while she and my Dad were watching a loud BYU vs. Air Force basketball game, within minutes he fell sound asleep.

We had a fun time bowling with Grammy, Papa and Great Grandma.

Ethan loved using the dinosaur and the pink bubble gum ball.

We had a great post holiday week which of course included plenty of ice cream cake,

and a motorcycle ride!

When we visited in October my Dad let Ethan play at the playground at the school during their ride, he hoped that by going a different direction Ethan wouldn't remember the playground. No such luck, about 2 mins. into the ride Ethan asked Papa where the park was...so they had to stop and play.

We also learned that we can survive a night without Brown Dog. He was accidentally left at a friend's house one night. Oh my. The tears and the sobbing lasted through the night. Thankfully Grammy had quite a collection of stuffed animals to fill in that night. When Brown Dog came home the next day the reunion was marvelous! He was reintroduced to all of the Christmas decorations, etc. Even that day Ethan would tear up remembering how he had been gone.

We had a great time! Today Ethan asked me if we could go to Grammy's house. We wish we were just a little closer. Even though the good-byes are always hard it was worth it for the fun times we had together and memories we made!
